CBT

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or CBT is action orientated, goal directed and time limited. An aim is to become independent of the Cognitive Behaviour Therapist  as quickly as possible. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is not just listening sympathetically, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is an activity that is  interactive and has a definite direction. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy can also be used to help people with everyday situations such as giving up smoking, stress, weight problems, life direction, management performance. I am a Psychologist , and CBT practitioner with an MSc in CBT, and also a qualified Counsellor. I have NHS experience, but now work in private practice. On top of my existing qualifications, I am also working towards a Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology at Manchester University. I also use a procedure called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing). EMDR is useful for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). 

I am based in Saddleworth, near Oldham Lancashire, but  work throughout the  UK providing private psychotherapy, workshops and psychological coaching. I do Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Insurance companies, GP surgeries, Solicitors practices and Occupational Mental Health companies. I have been a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist for The National Phobic Society (now Anxiety UK), and I am a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist providing counselling for Cheshire County Council.

I  work to  British Psychological Society (BPS) guidelines, and also to those of the British Association of Cognitive and Behavioural Psychotherapy.  

A GP referral is not necessary, but I recommended that you consult your GP to discuss with them if they feel CBT is appropriate for you. I would be happy to speak to you or you GP prior to arranging an appointment. Some people might not want to get referrals on the NHS for conditions such as depression or anxiety, because they are concerned about having such referrals appearing on their medical records. For more information  click on the hyperlink.  In these circumstances, private consultations may be appropriate. Also waiting times for the NHS may be considerable, depending on where you live.

 I have consulting facilities  in Saddleworth, but home visits may also be possible. Also consultation nationwide and internationally via email, or video link are possible if you live out of my immediate area. For corporate work, I have a network of CBT  practitioners that can be accessed for therapy, stress management or training. For costs please contact me by email or telephone. For people who live to far away for them to travel to me, or me to travel to them, I can use ON LINE Therapy. This works very easily if you have a pc camera, Skype. Also email therapy works very well, the costs are worked out on a time used to read and  reply to email, I keep a time log. To save on administration costs you pay for a block of one hour of therapy at a time,  and use up that time at your pace. These methods can be very cost effective by spreading the cost of therapy, it also saves time travelling, and gives you the opportunity to consider in detail what you want to say, and  take time to consider my replies and suggestions.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is an approach to help people experiencing a wide range of mental health difficulties. The basis of CBT is that what people think affects how they feel emotionally and also alters what they do.

During times of mental distress the way the person sees and judges themselves and the things that happens to them alters. Things tend to become more extreme and unhelpful. This can worsen how the person feels and causes them to act in ways that keep their distress going.

CBT practitioners, who come from many training backgrounds, aim to work jointly with the person to help them begin to identify and then change their extreme thinking and unhelpful behaviour. By doing this, the result is a significant improvement in how the person feels and lives their day to day life.
